Billy Thompson – Ty Siamas:

Started at Ty Siamas: 2009
Ages taught: 4 to 74+
Languages: Welsh and English.

Violin (beginner to very advanced).

With the violin being Billy’s first instrument (http://www.billythompson.co.uk), this is taught from beginner level (folk and classical music) to a very advanced level including the teaching of Grade 8 Classical Violin and beyond – and also the art of Improvisation. In recent years Billy has been teaching a Post Graduate Jazz student at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff.

Local successes include numerous students taking graded exams and the young virtuoso Isaac Aldred who won the Tywyn Young Musician of the Year when just 10 years old.

Guitar (beginner to advanced)

Billy’s second instrument is the guitar – an instrument that has always been part of Billy’s musical life. This is taught to a high level also. Students have taken graded exams (Rockschool) up to Grade 7 (so far). Students have included Dalton Foster who recently received a full scholarship to a private 6th form college in Shrewsbury specialising in music.

With one of Billy’s passions being Gypsy Jazz, Gypsy Jazz guitar is also taught where the music of Django Reinhardt and his style of playing is looked into in depth.

Bass Guitar (beginner to Intermediate)

Billy’s knowledge of the guitar means he also plays bass frequently in his studio (http://www.thompsoundmusic.co.uk). This is taught using a mixture of the Rockshool grade syllabus and also encouraging a general understanding of the fundamental importance of the bass guitar in many a group environment.

Mandolin (beginner to advanced)

The Mandolin is a common second instrument for a violinist (being tuned the same as a violin) and as such has also been a large part of Billy’s musical life so far. Many aspects of Mandolin playing are looked at from Classical to folk and much more.

Ukelele (beginner to intermediate)

A great instrument for all ages. The ukelele can be a great introduction to the guitar or a great instrument in its own right. Both options are taught.

Drums (beginner to Intermediate/advanced)

Billy loves playing the drums and has been teaching them at Tŷ Siamas and schools in the area since 2009. Using a ‘matched grip’, Billy teaches and encourages the reading of drum notation and numerous students have taken graded exams using the Rockschool syllabus.
